The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) has launched its 100th project in the form of Hypo-RESOLVE, a 4 year, EUR 26.8 million project on diabetes. The milestone comes as IMI celebrates its 10th anniversary with a series of events and activities. The IMI project portfolio is diverse; many projects, like Hypo-RESOLVE, focus on specific health issues such as diabetes, neurological conditions (including dementia, depression, and pain), cancer, auto-immune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis), and infectious diseases (including antimicrobial resistance and Ebola).

AI in healthcare is developing rapidly, with many applications currently in use or in development in the UK and worldwide. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics examines the current and potential applications of AI in healthcare, and the ethical issues arising from its use, in a new briefing note, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and research, published today.

The Horizon 2020 funded KONFIDO Action concluded its activities related to User Requirement Analysis. This initial phase of the Action entailed a gap analysis study about secure and interoperable solutions at the systemic level, the definition and analysis of user scenarios, the user requirements elicitation, and an intense interaction with the KONFIDO end-users (both patients/citizens and healthcare professionals) for the identification of barriers and facilitators concerning eHealth acceptance coupled with cybersecurity technologies.

There is an increasing amount of self-help tools among people with diabetes. They use apps, social media and various cloud-based solutions to cope. Now, e-health researchers will make guidelines for evaluating the apps and online resources they use.

European Commission has put forward a proposal to boost cooperation amongst EU Member States for assessing health technology. Greater transparency will empower patients, by ensuring their access to information on the added clinical value of new technology that could potentially benefit them.

New technology is bringing the power of augmented reality into clinical practice. The system, called ProjectDR, allows medical images such as CT scans and MRI data to be displayed directly on a patient's body in a way that moves as the patient does.
