Pioneering ICT Solutions Open New Opportunities

TietoTieto, North Europe's leading ICT providers for healthcare and welfare, is presenting its pioneering solutions focusing on the industry's hottest topics at the World of Health IT Conference and Exhibition, starting today in Barcelona, Spain.

Time is right for digital self services
Tieto's Digital Citizen Services eHealth offering enables improvements in productivity and collaboration by involving citizens in the healthcare process. The Digital Self Care Service, part of this solution offering, is targeted at patients with chronic diseases and aims at engaging them in the care process. For example lab results, healthcare professionals' comments on them and information on the next steps of the treatment are automatically visible to the patient. The service thus reduces waiting time on the phone and the need for visits. It also saves a lot of time – critical for professionals - as the amount of administrative work is reduced.

"Today, citizens already have the necessary know-how and willingness to use digital services, which means that the time is right for the introduction of these kinds of solutions that both open many new opportunities for care service providers and empower patients," says Ari Laurila, innovator in Digital Citizen Services Development at Tieto Healthcare & Welfare.

The City of Espoo in Finland is the first to have employed the Digital Self Care Service, which has already brought significant benefits by streamlining the clinical workflow in the chronic disease management and treatment operations. Clinical Pathway ensures patient safety while optimizing financial performance

Tieto's Clinical Pathway solution and related services are focused on digitizing treatment processes, enabling patient-centric care and sharing best practices. The solution provides extensive support in default treatment steps for clearly defined medical problems. Organizations' existing processes can also be converted into the framework of Clinical Pathways. The solution keeps healthcare staff up to date at every stage of the patient’s treatment process, providing them with the right information at any time and in any place.

"To give an example, our solution has helped shorten hospital stays by almost 4% and thus enabled yearly savings of 500 000 euros in one German hospital," says Dr. Axel Müller, who heads Strategic Business Product Management at Tieto Healthcare Central Europe.

Real-time patient information soon available on a national level in Sweden
Real-time patient information can soon be accessed throughout the entire healthcare system in Sweden with the help of the Swedish National Patient Summary solution (known as NPÖ), delivered by Tieto as an all-in-one service. The NPÖ solution, one of the first of its kind in the world, has been in use since the beginning of September 2009 in Örebro, Sweden, and is based on the country’s national IT strategy for the healthcare and welfare sector. The solution makes real-time information available to both public and private healthcare providers and authorities.

"Our goal is to see the NPÖ solution implemented in all Swedish counties and regions by the end of 2013 and widely used for communications between councils, municipalities and private healthcare providers," says Christer Bergh, Vice President at Tieto Healthcare Sweden.

At a later stage, the solution will allow Swedish residents to access their own medical records via the Internet. Thus, the solution will not only improve diagnosis, treatment and follow-up activities, but it will also offer patients better access and control over their personal medical records.

Societies can offer best lifecare for citizens also in the future
A common denominator for all Tieto's solutions is that they have a direct effect on the work of healthcare professionals, improving the quality and security of care, decreasing the burden of administrative work and thus enabling more patient-centric care.

"As European healthcare organizations are struggling with increasing cost pressures and a lack of personnel, these improvements may have a crucial effect on our societies' ability to provide their citizens the care they need," says Arto Ryymin, Executive Vice President at Tieto Healthcare and Welfare. "These solutions help to focus on patient-centric care, increase flexibility in seamless care and enhance the quality of care. All of these are necessary to help solve the challenges we are all facing in Europe. Today, patients are - and indeed should be seen as - active and powerful players in healthcare."

Tieto's solutions are presented at booth number 129 at the WoHIT exhibition.
