Open Call SC1-HCO-18-2020: Developing Methodological Approaches for Improved Clinical Investigation and Evaluation of High-Risk Medical Devices
In May 2017, a new Regulation on medical devices, Regulation (EU) 2017/745 entered into force that will come into effect in spring 2020. This new Regulation sets forth reinforced rules for the generation of clinical evidence: for instance, clinical investigations for high-risk devices will be compulsory and the requirements regarding the clinical evaluation throughout the product lifetime are more stringent.

Cell and gene-based therapies have the potential to treat many debilitating diseases and conditions. However, the pace of their clinical development does not meet public expectations. They face difficulties reaching patients because inter alia the complexity and costs of product development, regulatory hurdles and the non-harmonized procedures for reimbursements. In addition, there are concerns over patient safety due to the use of unproven treatments.

European Reference Networks (ERNs) have been established under the Directive on Patients' rights in cross-border health care in view of tackling complex or rare diseases and conditions that require highly specialised diagnostic tools and treatments. Patient stratification aims at grouping patients into disease sub-groups, where the specific pathological processes involved are better defined (clinical/molecular phenotypes). This will lead to the development of targeted therapies, optimizing the intervention to individual patients, thus achieving greater success in treating or curing the patient.

Open Call SC1-PM-04-2016: Networking and Optimising the Use of Population and Patient Cohorts at EU Level
Proposals should aim at maximizing the exploitation of cohorts by bringing together national and/or European cohorts with common scientific interests (e.g. across diseases, children, mothers, elderly, birth, gender, etc.), and by taking advantage of new technologies (e.g. ICT, social platforms, etc.) and new type of data (e.g. geographical, genetic, eHealth records, etc.).

Open Call SC1-PM-07-2017: Promoting Mental Health and Well-being in the Young
Proposals should develop population-oriented primary prevention interventions to promote mental well-being of young people and assess them for their effectiveness. The interventions should build on but may go beyond existing state-of-the art knowledge on biological, psychological and social determinants of mental well-being such as societal, cultural, work life, lifestyle, epidemiological, economic and environmental perspectives.
