This publication provides an overview of the scope and organisation of health and elderly care in Denmark. The healthcare system operates across three political and administrative levels: the state, the regions and the municipalities (national, regional and local levels).
The state holds the overall regulatory and supervisory functions in health and elderly care. The five regions are primarily responsible for the hospitals, the general practitioners (GPs) and for psychiatric care. The 98 municipalities are responsible for a number of primary healthcare services as well as for elderly care.
The aim of the study on Big Data in Public Health, Telemedicine and Healthcare is to identify applicable examples of the use of Big Data in Health and develop recommendations for their implementation in the European Union. Examples of Big Data in Health were identified by a systematic literature review, after which the added value of twenty selected examples was evaluated. Based on the assessment of the added value and the quality of the evidence, ten priority examples were selected. Furthermore, potential policy actions for the implementation of Big Data in Health were identified in the literature, and a SWOT analysis was conducted to check the feasibility of the proposed actions. 
This publication is the result of a close co-operation between the OECD and the European Commission and is the first step in the Commission's "State of Health in the EU" initiative to strengthen country-specific and EU-wide knowledge on health issues. The content, including the selection of key indicators of health and health systems, was agreed upon by the OECD and the Commission, based mainly on the European Core Health Indicators (ECHI), the Joint Assessment Framework on Health, and using the 2014 Commission Communication on effective, accessible and resilient health systems as reference framework. 
In December 2015 at the 4th Conference of Partners of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA), European Commissioner Günther Oettinger (Digital Economy and Society) outlined how digital innovation, enabled by a functioning Digital Single Market, can help transform demographic change into an opportunity for Europe's economy and society.

More and more countries are already implementing - or in coming years they are going to implement - eHealth strategies, healthcare providers are investing boldly in It infrastructure and companies and start-ups are introducing increasingly modern mobile solutions to the market. The expectations of patients, doctors and nurses are rising along with their digital awareness. We are witnessing the crystallization of the new healthcare reality, where information serves as a pill with the power to solve many of today's problems.
