Virtual Skin Model Reveals Secrets of Skin Aging

Engineers and biologists at the University of Sheffield have shown how a recent theory - that skin has 'sleeping' stem cells which can be woken up when required - best explains how our skin constantly regrows. The research - conducted in collaboration with The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), makers of Olay, and published in Nature Scientific Reports - has implications for combating the effects of aging and perhaps even skin cancer.

Robotic Surgery Made Safer

Surgeons-to-be no longer have to practice on cadavers but can use "organ phantoms" instead. They may also practice with "virtual surgical simulators" and operating room monitoring systems. Those and other methods for improving patient safety in robotic surgery are the results of the large scale EU funded SAFROS project. The SAFROS project (7th Framework Programme) successfully passed its final review.

New Consumer Health Care Application from Finland

A research scientist working at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a user-friendly smart phone application that allows consumers to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) in the comfort of their own homes. The pocket-size device communicates with your mobile phone. Irregularities in the heartbeat can be seen with the application which helps to prevent heart and stress-related disorders.

Vodafone Foundation has announced the launch of the first Mobile for Good Europe Awards to search for iOS and Android apps designed to improve people's lives and deliver substantial public benefit. Creators of the winning apps, in categories including accessibility, mobilising public services, health and education, will receive a shared prize fund of € 200,000 to be used for the development of their innovations.
