The vision of NHS England’s then national director for patients and information, and the former UK digital champion, was to give patients greater access to digital health apps, self-help tools, and social networks, in ways that could "support recovery and promote well-being".

When it comes to Emergency Care, ChatGPT Overprescribes

If ChatGPT were cut loose in the Emergency Department, it might suggest unneeded x-rays and antibiotics for some patients and admit others who didn't require hospital treatment, a new study from UC San Francisco has found.

The researchers said that, while the model could be prompted in ways that make its responses more accurate, it's still no match for the clinical judgment of a human doctor.

AI Drives Development of Cancer Fighting Software

University of Houston researchers and their students are developing a new software technology, based on artificial intelligence, for advancing cell-based immunotherapy to treat cancer and other diseases.

CellChorus Inc., a spinoff from the University of Houston, is commercializing the UH-developed Time-lapse Imaging Microscopy In Nanowell Grids™ platform for dynamic single-cell analysis with label-free analysis. Now they've received a $2.5 million grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health to fast-track the development of an advanced "label-free" version of this technology in partnership with the University of Houston.

A recent position paper in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in ophthalmology. Led by Lama Al-Aswad, Professor of Ophthalmology and Irene Heinz Given and John La Porte Given Research Professor of Ophthalmology II, of the Scheie Eye Institute, the work represents a collaboration among researchers from Penn Engineering, Penn Medicine, the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem, and Gyeongsang National University College of Medicine in Korea.

HWL 2024 Brings Together a Record Number of 3,000 Participants

AI Language Models Write Good Doctor's Letters

Generative AI should be able to write usable doctor's letters and thus potentially speed up medical documentation, according to a study by the University Medical Center Freiburg. Around 93% of the AI-generated reports could have been used with only minimal adaptations, the researchers found.

Clinicians working at five of the six trusts in the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) can access test results from across their pathology network, following a summer roll-out of Clinisys' ICE OpenNet.

Clinisys ICE is an order communications and results reporting system that is used extensively in NHS hospitals and GP practices.
