A new Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Accelerator Programme is part of new Calls for proposals launched today by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). Of the other topics launched in the Calls, many address brain disorders (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, major depression) and immune-mediated diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and lupus as well as inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's and colitis, and skin diseases like dermatitis and psoriasis).

Digital solutions supporting a continuum of care across a range of health and care services can relieve the pressure on governments to provide more cost-effective health and care systems by improving utilisation of healthcare and health outcomes. In this context the challenges are to network, lead and facilitate health systems research, innovation and digitisation in view of addressing key areas of interventions in health and care services including health promotion and disease prevention.

The goal of the Individual Fellowships is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers, wishing to diversify their individual competence in terms of skill acquisition through advanced training, international and intersectoral mobility. Individual Fellowships provide opportunities to researchers of any nationality to acquire and transfer new knowledge and to work on research and innovation in Europe (EU Member States and Horizon 2020 Associated Countries) and beyond.

The EU-funded network of digital innovation hubs DIATOMIC will distribute EUR 1.5 M to European SMEs, midcaps and Competence Centers. DIATOMIC is looking to accelerate development and adoption of new products/processes based on smart electronics and smart systems in health, agrifood, and manufacturing sectors. The call for applications is open from 15 March to 15 June.

The building stock in Europe today is not fit to support a shift from institutional care to the home-based independent living model for the ageing population. There is a recognised need to facilitate the development of community-based services and to stimulate the emergence of "age-friendly home" conversions.

Health and care service providers and users are increasingly facing complex decisions when exploring and investing in new health and care solutions. There is a need to support cross-border cooperation in preparation of procurement of research and innovative digital solutions, including on how to balance innovation risks with improved outcomes.

The ProEmpower procurers are looking for a diabetes management solution that will tackle the unmet needs in the current treatment of diabetes such as the fragmentation in today’s healthcare systems, the overreliance on and the ineffectiveness of pharmacotherapy, the late detection of the disease and the frequency of severe complications. This will be achieved by providing personalised and multi-disciplinary care to diabetes patients and empowering them to become responsible actors in the care process.

Large amounts of valuable health data are generated and collected during and between citizens' medical examinations across Europe. However, opportunities to reuse these data for research and better healthcare are often missed because health data continue to be confined in data silos, often not matching semantic standards, quality needs and safe data exchange techniques.

The progress in computer modelling and simulation applied in disease management is a European strength and various Decision Support Systems have been developed for different medical disciplines. While the market is developing today, addressing the need of more precise and personalised diagnostics and treatments, the proposed software tools and platforms often need to further conquer visibility and trust from users and investors to get implemented in the routine clinical practice.

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is launching a new Call for proposals covering diabetes, antimicrobial resistance, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and medicines safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding, to name just a few. The total budget of the Call is EUR 223 million, around half of which comes from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme, and half of which comes from EFPIA companies and IMI Associated Partners.
