TietoEnator's EPR solution integrated with speech recognition gives cost savings

TietoEnatorThe clinical staff at the Norwegian hospitals of Sykehuset Telemark and Sykehuset Buskerud have a more effective daily life due to a new speech recognition solution delivered by Sykehuspartner in cooperation with TietoEnator and Max Manus AS. The new workflow is much simpler and faster, and gives substantial cost savings. The solution is the first in its field for clinical use in Norwegian hospitals.

Knut Lindås, the person responsible for the project at Sykehuspartner, said the solution has already got a lot of attention. The radiology departments were the first department to start using these types of solutions. The doctor can dictate his report direct into the journal and immediately acknowledge the dictation as journal text. The fact that the solution is now in use in other clinics of the hospital is a large and important step forward. The solution leads to simpler and faster sharing of valuable and sometimes critical information in the patient's treatment. Administrative resources, previously occupied with time-consuming journal handling and work, can now be released for other prioritized tasks.

TietoEnator's partner, Max Manus AS, together with Philips, has developed the core of the speech recognition solution. The company has done extensive work in preparing a vocabulary containing 64,000 words and medical terms. The speech recognition is now integrated into TietoEnator's electronic patient record system (EPR). The health region South will implement the solution in all hospitals in the region.

Studies of similar projects in other countries show that speech recognition integrated with EPR give substantial time and cost savings as well as a higher quality of data entered into the journal. TietoEnator has been delivering similar solutions to the primary healthcare market in Finland since 2004, and also to several hospitals in Germany. The company has also published a voice control solution for the Finnish and Swedish dental care markets.
