Nottingham University Hospitals selects Medway Maternity from System C

System CNottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has selected System C's Medway Maternity software to handle over 10,000 births a year. The Trust is one of the largest acute teaching trusts in the country, providing services to over 2.5 million residents in Nottingham and its surrounding communities. It also provides specialist services to a further 3 to 4 million people from neighbouring counties each year.

System C will deploy Medway Maternity at the Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen's Medical Centre campuses, both being regional referral units for feto-maternal medicine and high risk pregnancies.

The system will be used by 370 midwives, 60 doctors and 50 administration staff across the two sites. In addition, around 120 midwives working in the community will use digital pens to collect assessment and booking information and enter it directly into Medway.

Dr Ian Denley, chief executive of System C, said the company was delighted to have won such an important contract. "Nottingham University Hospitals is one of the country's foremost acute providers. We are delighted to have won this maternity contract in a 7-month competitive procurement, and to have done so against such stiff competition."

Lucy Kean, maternity service lead for NUH, commented: "We are very excited about this new system. We evaluated many different systems and System C was consistently rated highest by all members of staff involved in the review. We are entering an age where accurate and user friendly electronic records are at the heart of all that we do. We know that System C will make this an achievable aim."

As well as having clear and concise functionality, Medway Maternity will capture full in-depth patient care information to support the hand held records. All users will have easy access to regularly updated electronic clinical guidance materials relating to local and national standards.

Medway Maternity will be interfaced to the Trust's PAS and results reporting software. In addition, there will be a number of feeds to other downstream systems, including neonatal, fetal medicine and GP systems.

The system will incorporate integrated CTG surveillance and archiving.

Medway Maternity will replace NUH's 20-year old maternity system and the first phase is expected to go live in July 2011.
