Speeding Up Diagnoses

Siemens Healthcaresyngo®.via (1) helps reduce the time from admission to an emergency ward to diagnosis in cardiac patients. At Innsbruck University Hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, radiologists and patients benefit from the advances in radiology.

Acute Solutions
Siemens' new advanced imaging solution, syngo.via, helps streamline the workflow in any radiology department. It offers a number of opportunities to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients, says Professor Gudrun Feuchtner, MD, of Innsbruck University Hospital in Innsbruck, Austria. A good example is patients with acute chest pain. A fast diagnosis of cardiac emergency patients is often vital. The pain might be an indicator of a cardiac attack, in others cases the cause might be less clear and by no means life threatening. Using Siemens' advanced visualization solution, syngo.via, helps radiologists readily separate the severe cases from the lesser ones.

Passing on the benefits
Using noninvasive intervention techniques is common in cardiology today. These methods were introduced in the past years and also benefit from the diagnostic improvements achieved by syngo.via. When preparing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) (2) surgeons rely on the information and images supplied by the radiologists. Their quality increased considerably, as syngo.via offers new functionalities to analyze images. Surgeons can easily access the computed tomography images from the computer in their office (3). There is no need to go to a workstation somewhere in the radiology department to prepare the operation. According to Dr. Feuchtner syngo.via is the future of radiology. It increases the speed of case preparation and offers ample opportunities to share images. This will lead to an improvement of diagnosis and ultimately to a better treatment of patients.

Key Benefits

  • At the Innsbruck University Hospital in Austria, time savings of up to 70 percent when preparing cardiac cases (4)
  • For TAVI, surgeons benefit from improved patient selection and from receiving better information about the anatomical details important for a successful placement.

1. syngo.via can be used as a stand-alone device or together with a variety of syngo.via-based software options, which are medical devices in their own rights.
2. The full version of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is not yet available in the U.S.
3. Prerequisites include: Internet connection to clinical network, meeting of minimum hardware requirements, and adherence to local data security regulations.
4. The outcomes achieved by the Siemens customers described herein were achieved in the customer's unique setting. Since there is no "typical" hospital and many variables exist (e.g. hospital size, case mix, level of IT adoption), there isn't a guarantee that others will achieve the same results.
