Commission gives green light to launch 30 new eTEN projects

On 16 November the European Commission launched 30 new eTen projects which will run over the next 3 years. These will validate and deploy electronic services in the public interest serving European citizens and businesses in areas including eHealth, eGovernment, eLearning, eInclusion, SME support, and Trust and Security.

The projects have been chosen according to their merits and their expected impact on quality of life of the European citizen and benefits to administrations and businesses. The selected projects are expected to leverage around 140 Mio Euro of total investments, of which 45 Mio comes from the eTEN programme.

The eTEN Community programme (2000-2006) supports the deployment of public-interest e-services across Member States and underpins Commissioner Redings' i2010 initiative on an information society for growth and employment. The projects will, in particular, foster inclusion, better public services and quality of life through the use of ICT. The eTEN programme has, over the past years, been adapted to encourage the emergence of large projects with high impact. Some of the project examples already supported by eTEN include ePoll, an electronic voting and polling system, which is now being piloted in three member states, Netc@rds, a project preparing the electronic phase of the European Health Insurance Cards which is expanding to cover 300 hospitals in 15 countries, and MICHAEL, a project providing a quick and simple multilingual access to Europe's digital cultural heritage encompassing the on-line treasures of 13 national collections.

The 2006 call for proposals was the last for the eTEN Programme. From 2007 onwards, support to electronic services in areas of public interest will be provided by the ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP), a component of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) which will run until 2013.

It represents a 60 % increase in annual spending on actions related to competitiveness and innovation by 2013 compared to 2006.
