iSOFT Launches Web-Based E-Prescribing Solution for the NHS

iSOFT Group LimitediSOFT Group Limited (ASX:ISF) has launched a new e-prescribing and medication administration (ePMA) solution in the UK and is close to finalising deals with a number of NHS trusts to become early adopters.

The solution is already used at ten hospitals in Australia and across six district health boards in New Zealand for safer and more efficient medicines management. Users report sharp falls in incidents due to drugs being wrongly prescribed or doses being missed. And incidents due to illegible scripts are a thing of the past.

Working with First DataBank, a leading provider of drug databases and active clinical decision support, iSOFT has adapted the solution for the UK market. It offers a drug formulary and decision support rules engine to stop drugs being wrongly prescribed and so shorten hospital stays. It will also streamline processes such as discharge, reduce re-admission rates, and cut costs.

"We have a very strong, if not unique, proposition in combining the scale and capability of iSOFT to deliver a best of breed ePMA solution," said Adrian Stevens, Managing Director of iSOFT's UK and Ireland business.

"This is also very timely following the recent publication of the UK government's white paper, Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS, which highlights the importance of improving healthcare outcomes and patient safety.

"Last year, the National Patient Safety Agency reported that more than 200 patients every month need further treatment or die because of medication mistakes. Our ePMA solution can help to drastically reduce this statistic."

The solution is specifically designed to allow NHS trusts that have already invested in elements of an electronic patient record to introduce a fully integrated and comprehensive ePMA solution.

Mark Treleaven, Sales and Marketing Director, First DataBank said: "It is clear that iSOFT's new solution has been designed to meet the specialist requirements of prescribing and administering medicines. As such, we are very excited to see our product associated with an initiative that will make full use of the Multilex DDF sophistication."

The first early adopter sites are expected to go-live in 2011. The software will be exhibited at various events throughout the year including E-Health Insider Live in November.
