FDA Clears First Major Imaging Device Advancement for Computed Tomography in Nearly a Decade

FDAToday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the first new major technological improvement for Computed Tomography (CT) imaging in nearly a decade.

"Computed tomography is an important medical imaging tool that can aid in diagnosing disease, trauma or abnormality; planning and guiding interventional or therapeutic procedures; and monitoring the effectiveness of certain therapies," said Laurel Burk, Ph.D., assistant director of the Diagnostic X-ray Systems Team in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

FDA Authorizes Software that Can Help Identify Prostate Cancer

FDAToday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized marketing of software to assist medical professionals who examine body tissues (pathologists) in the detection of areas that are suspicious for cancer as an adjunct (supplement) to the review of digitally-scanned slide images from prostate biopsies (tissue removed from the body).

CliniSys GroupPathologists at one of England's most innovative trusts have chosen the CliniSys laboratory information system (LIMS) as part of a digital strategy to support its drive to continually improve patient care.

The pathology team at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has decided to replace their legacy LIMS with WinPath Enterprise, hosted by CliniSys from its UK data centre.

Roche Opens Access to Pathology Imaging Tools to Improve Patient Care

RocheRoche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) announced the introduction of the Roche Digital Pathology Open Environment that allows software developers to easily integrate their image analysis tools for tumour tissue with Roche's uPath enterprise software, an application for pathologist workflow. This open environment allows for the secure exchange and flow of data so that pathologists can access advanced algorithms from third parties alongside Roche's menu of artificial intelligence-based image analysis tools.

App Launched in Multiple Languages to Help Patients Manage LongTerm Conditions

An app is being launched to help patients with long term conditions manage their health via care plans accessed on their phone. Unity, by mobile health provider, Health Fabric, will be licensed by participating GP practices, which can then offer the system to patients so they can be more proactive in their care.

Researchers Use AI to Predict which COVID-19 Patients will Need a Ventilator to Breathe

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have developed an online tool to help medical staff quickly determine which COVID-19 patients will need help breathing with a ventilator.

The tool, developed through analysis of CT scans from nearly 900 COVID-19 patients diagnosed in 2020, was able to predict ventilator need with 84% accuracy.

The agreement will strengthen the partnership between the companies in the development of ECG technology that measure the electrical activity of the heart.
