Shearwater Throws its Weight Behind Mobile Clinical Applications

Dr Ian Denley and Markus Bolton have unveiled Shearwater Systems, a new company established with £2.16m of initial funding to develop mobile clinical applications and health records for the UK health and social care market. Canterbury-based Shearwater Systems has already taken on 15 staff, the majority of whom are technical. The team is developing a range of healthcare IT products including the Rapport Clinical Portal and the Rapport Patient Portal. The Rapport products are based on Shearwater's own development engine and are tailored to operate in native mode on IOS, Android and Windows machines.

Shearwater Systems also announced today that Graphnet Health has commissioned the company to adapt both portals for its CareCentric electronic health record.CareCentric is a market-leading shared care record which combines information from multiple care settings and gives clinicians and carers, regardless of their setting, complete access to data such as medications, electronic test results, care plans, discharge summaries and scanned health and medical records.

CareCentric holds over half a billion health and social care documents for 17m patients across 42 NHS organisations.

The Rapport Clinical Portal, badged as CareCentric Mobile, will make this data available to Graphnet's 30,000 clinical users on smartphones and tablets. The Rapport Patient Portal, badged as the CareCentric Patient Portal, allows patients to view and manage their own records on smart phones, tablets and PCs.

These new products will be shown for the first time at EHI Live at Birmingham's NEC on 5th-6th November and will be deployed in March 2014. (Graphnet and Shearwater Systems will be exhibiting on stand C50).

The Rapport portals and mobile solutions will be made available for use by other suppliers and healthcare products during 2014.

Shearwater Systems is funded with £1.3m start-up capital raised from a number of private investors including Bolton and Denley. In addition, the company has attracted 860,000 funding from Kent County Council. This has been made available through the Expansion East Kent Scheme, which is part of the government's Regional Growth Fund.

Key staff from Shearwater Healthcare Investments will also work with Shearwater Systems to accelerate the company's development.

"We founded Shearwater Systems because we saw a clear need for advanced clinical solutions running across a full range of mobile devices," said Denley, Shearwater Systems' CEO.

"We are delighted to be using our products to help Graphnet and its customers. Rapport brings additional power and accessibility to CareCentric products and Graphnet gives Shearwater Systems an instant market for Rapport Clinical and Patient Portals. This is an excellent arrangement for all parties."

Denley and Bolton are also co-founders of Shearwater Healthcare Investments. This company provides hands-on expertise and growth capital to companies that aim to use technology and IT to transform the delivery of health and social care. It was launched last year to capitalise on the demise of the National Programme and the creation of open markets in healthcare computing.

Shearwater Healthcare Investments already has a relationship with Graphnet Health. Its founders made a major investment in the company earlier this year and its staff provide operational support across all areas of Graphnet's business including corporate development, product design and development, and sales and marketing.

Denley said: "One of Shearwater Healthcare Investment's aims is to invest in companies that can work together, providing mutual sales and development support. The Shearwater/Graphnet deal is a great example of the benefits of such collaboration."
