AxSys Technology Targets Expansion in UK Healthcare

AxSys Technology (AxSys), a provider of patient-centric clinical information solutions, plans to extend its reach across the UK market in response to the current shift in NHS strategies and UK Government healthcare policy initiatives. Part of its growth plans also include the introduction of new solutions which will focus on the enablement of Health Information Exchange frameworks that will facilitate the sharing of information and the creation of collaborative care environments.

By bringing to market its new and enhanced portfolio of solutions, AxSys Technology will be able to offer a robust and comprehensive software platform to ensure healthcare delivery is co-ordinated across the various healthcare settings both regionally and nationally.

Already with a considerable presence in the UK - and having won several significant contracts in the last 12 months - AxSys is well placed to assist trusts to address many of the key challenges they face from improving operational efficiencies and cutting costs to improving the quality and safety levels of patient care.

With the NHS under increasing pressure to provide modern, consistent and effective healthcare, whilst meeting £20 billion cost saving targets by 2014, many NHS Trusts are reassessing their healthcare IT strategies and looking for ways to protect existing investments. The perceived change in direction and political uncertainty surrounding the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) means that trusts are either opting out or looking for another option, and it is these trusts AxSys will aim to target with its existing and new solutions.

"One of the great benefits of working with AxSys is our incremental approach which makes implementing our solutions affordable. No longer is there a need to rip and replace as now it's about interoperability and integration and adopting the 'connect all' mantra," comments Dr Pradeep Ramayya, CEO of AxSys Technology. "As our solutions have been designed to integrate with existing NHS Trust systems this, in turn, protects IT investments already made whilst enabling truly joined-up healthcare delivery."

"Plus our enhanced portfolio of solutions will enable the exchange of health information allowing all the various organisations involved in a patients' care, to connect and collaborate. And by eliminating those silos of information that currently exist, the continuity and co-ordination of care can be achieved."

With its 10 year proven track record, AxSys will position itself as a viable alternative for trusts through its Excelicare solution - a patient-centric application that allows the creation of highly-tailored clinical systems that supports collaborative care and multi-disciplinary working, particularly around complex long term medical conditions. By incorporating advanced telecommunication, multi-media and decision support technologies, within a clinician-friendly Electronic Patient Record (EPR) framework, Excelicare can bring all data about a patient to a single, accessible point ensuring the sharing and streamlined access to information by clinical and administrative staff whatever their location. Currently in use in over 100 NHS Trust sites, the diversity of the Excelicare clinician user base makes it one of the most widely used clinical systems in the UK today.

"Not only is the NHS faced with cost cutting and targets around improving patient care, but it is also faced with a ticking time-bomb - that of an ageing population, a higher incidence of those living with a chronic disease or long term condition and an explosion of obesity amongst all ages," adds Dr Ramayya. "It is clear that the UK is far behind other countries in addressing these issues so now is time for NHS Trusts to take action. And in my mind the use of technology and telemedicine, that enables collaborative and multi-disciplinary practices, and co-ordination of treatment across care settings, is key to managing this growing problem.

"Change must come, where healthcare moves away from a one-size-fits-all approach to a patient-centred approach. With our in-depth technical and clinical understanding of the UK market, I believe AxSys is now well placed to help NHS Trusts deliver better healthcare whilst optimising efficiency, exceeding targets placed upon them and keeping costs down."

About AxSys Technology Limited
AxSys Technology Limited specialises in the development and implementation of clinical solutions to improve the delivery of healthcare. All AxSys solutions are patient-centric and are designed with a clinical perspective to directly benefit patients and healthcare providers. AxSys was set up by experienced doctors who recognised the benefits of the Collaborative Care model in their own clinical practice and realised that a flexible communication oriented clinical information system would be a key element in its successful delivery. The company, registered in Scotland and based in Glasgow, started operations in January 2000.

AxSys' product Excelicare was conceived as a solution for Collaborative Care. It is a powerful toolset-based application that allows the creation of highly tailored clinical systems to reflect the complex working patterns of clinicians across the healthcare spectrum and has the ability to integrate effectively with existing healthcare IT systems. It incorporates advanced telecommunication, multi-media and decision support technologies within a clinician-friendly Electronic Patient Record (EPR) framework.
