SmartLife Technology Revolutionises Smart Garments for Healthcare

SmartLife® Technology LtdSmartLife Technology has advanced remote monitoring by integrating sophisticated, knitted sensors into any garment from shirts to socks to arm bands. Until now, traditional health monitoring was fashioned through adhesive pads/gels, wired to medical equipment and focused on torso monitoring. However, Smartlife has developed technology specifically tailored to each wearer's needs; producing real time and accurate ECG, respiratory, heart rate, and EMG biorhythms which are comparable to a 12 lead ECG machine.

Hospitals are increasingly under pressure due to the economic climate, MRSA infection risks, overcrowding, aging 'baby boomer' generation and environmental concerns. Remote monitoring will enable patients who only require monitoring, to be discharged from the hospital (lowering risk for MRSA infections and defuse overcrowding situations) and those patients can be comfortably monitored by their doctors via their PC, mobile phone, or call centres.

Mark Pedely, CEO, said: "Using smart garments can save time money and ultimately lives. We envision our technology being integrated with existing monitoring machines in hospitals around the world; or used by anyone who requires remote monitoring in their home.

"We are a medical technology company, operating internationally to become the leading global provider of personalised wearable monitoring systems."

Founded in 2004, The SmartLife team, have developed a novel textile based technology platform incorporating flexible integral dry sensors that allow the monitoring of vital health signs such as ECG, heart rate, EMG, respiration, tidal flow and skin temperature to compliment the sensors with advanced signal processing, to meet international clinical standards.

This allows the continuous monitoring of a person’s vital signs and wellbeing in their daily lives on a 24/7 basis.

Mark Pedley concludes: "Our technology can address major factors facing the healthcare industry. The key is our technology is adaptable, comfortable, reliable and achievable. We can monitor anyone, from most locations on the body, with real-time results, affordably."

About SmartLife
SmartLife® Technology Ltd is a UK based Medical Technology Company becoming a leading global provider within the field of personalised wearable monitoring systems.

The SmartLife team, have developed a novel textile based technology platform incorporating flexible integral dry sensors that allow the monitoring of vital health signs such as ECG, heart rate, EMG, respiration, tidal flow and skin temperature, to meet international clinical standards.

This allows the continuous monitoring of a person's vital signs and wellbeing in their daily lives on a 24/7 basis.

The construction of the garments ensures the sensors are automatically in contact with the skin, their position is correctly located and the wearer requires little instruction for set-up or routine use.

The technology represents a paradigm shift from traditional high cost patient monitoring in hospitals to affordable unobtrusive remote personalised monitoring in the home and whilst continuing their normal activities.

SmartLife intelligent garments enhance performance in sports participation, increase safety for operatives in dangerous and critical situations and offer reassurance to enhance the well-being of the elderly and those with acute health conditions.

Imagine a world where your health, well-being and physiological performance can be easily monitored anytime, anywhere.

About the Technology
SmartLife® Technology, drawn from leading research and development in electronics, materials science and textiles at the University of Manchester, has created a garment system for monitoring human physiological signs. Our garment system contains discrete electrical, electronic and knitted components, engineered to create a system-wide functionality for sensing human physiological signs.

Our Technology system contains unique features. Our garment system is based on knitted sensor structures which are integral to the garment’s manufacture, and secondly, these sensors are based on a dry interface – with no reliance upon gel-based facilitation.

Our Technology has created a seamless, easy to wear garment which reads human vital signs direct from the skin with no need for additional requirements. Our garment systems can be worn in any strenuous or resting state, they are easily washed and will last for years.

Our one-piece seamless garment system works as demonstrated in the above 3D demo. Data collected by the SmartLife HealthVest™ can be transmitted in real time via bluetooth to a remote computer, PDA, or even a cell phone.

The SmartLife HealthVest® can offer the possibility of avoiding uncomfortable hospital medical examinations and integrate them in your normal lifestyle.
