CASCOM Workshop on Informational Technology for Medical Quality Monitoring and Emergency Care

October, 7th, at MEDNET 2007, Leipzig, Germany
Information Technology is more and more influencing the daily practice in healthcare. Examples are the proliferation of electronic health records, workflow support for medical processes and therapy protocols, etc. Together with the ubiquitous availability of relevant information, information technology also found its way into emergency care - both in prehospital and in hospital emergency care. Emergency physicians are given access to most relevant patient information in order to avoid adverse events and to better tailor emergency treatment to the patient's profile. Similarly, the tight interaction of emergency care and clinical information systems also allows to better monitor the quality of emergency care by providing remote access to relevant data.

The aim of this workshop is to discuss the role of information technology in the different fields of emergency care, ranging from emergency medicine in pre-hospital emergencies to emergency surgery and intensive care in hospitals. The focus will be on the question how information technology can provide best support the emergency physician and how the quality of emergency care can be improved by ubiquitous data and services that can be used independent of the current location of the physician.

Relevant topics of the workshop include but are not limited to:

  • Applications for IT in emergency care
  • Applications for IT in monitoring the quality of emergency medicine
  • Data models and ontologies for emergency data
  • Services for medical emergencies
  • Ubiquitous proliferation of data and services in emergency medicine
  • IT supported advanced physician, patient, and ward staff communication.
