New Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter to Give Keynote Speech at EHI Live 2012

EHI Live 20126 - 7 November 2012, Birmingham, UK.
EHI has announced that new health minister Dr Dan Poulter is to be one of the keynote speakers at EHI Live 2012. Appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary of State at the Department of Health (DH) in September 2012, Dr Poulter has assumed responsibility for a portfolio that includes the NHS IT and information strategy, the DH's relationship with the NHS Information Centre and NHS procurement. Dr Poulter will use his EHI Live 2012 keynote speech to lay out his perspective on implementing the new NHS information strategy for England to empower patients and professionals. He will also reflect on other IT strategies across the rest of the UK.

EHI Live is considered as one of the most important and best attended events in the UK eHealth calendar, providing a forum for the entire healthcare IT community to meet and discuss a wide range of eHealth issues. EHI Live offers the opportunity to explore and understand the impact on eHealth strategies of changes in technology and how healthcare is delivered, as well as an opportunity to learn from the experiences - good and bad - of colleagues working elsewhere.

Dr Poulter joins a prestigious list of other keynote speakers at the event that includes: Andrew Gwynne, shadow health minister; Liam Maxwell, deputy government chief information officer at the Cabinet Office; Dame Fiona Caldicott, chair of the National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care; and Dr Martin Murphy, clinical director for NHS Wales.

Neil Darvill, director health informatics, St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the newly elected EHI Healthcare IT Champion, said: "EHI Live represents an excellent environment for the UK healthcare IT community to come together to make a real difference in how IT and information is used to improve the health of UK citizens. At EHI Live, I know I'll have a chance to listen to varied and insightful speakers, get involved in lively discussions with people who are passionate and informed about eHealth issues, and meet a range of people who can really help me make progress with my own eHealth agenda."

Conference programme explores diversity and looks to the future
Each year, EHI Live offers visitors and delegates a wide range of opportunities to find out about the latest eHealth thinking and to exchange knowledge with others. The main conference programme in 2012 includes a number of strands that reflect the diversity of interests in healthcare IT:

  • The big picture provides keynote sessions with leading speakers, which will address the major issues in eHealth.
  • Major works ahead provides progress reports from healthcare organisations around the UK that are using IT to change healthcare delivery.
  • Research meets practice in informatics brings together the NHS and academia to explore how the information resources of the NHS can be better harnessed for the benefit of patients.
  • Health 2.0 provides a snapshot of some of the technologies that are changing the way healthcare is delivered.

Free conference sessions for exhibition visitors
In addition to the main conference programme, a number of free tracks are being run that will allow visitors attending the EHI Live exhibition to get even more value from their visit:

  • The CCIO Leaders Network Annual Conference is a free-to-attend event promoting clinical information leadership. This year, speakers will explore the role of chief clinical information officers (CCIOs) in various settings, and discuss a number of leadership and development topics related to making use of clinical information.
  • Finalists from the EHI Awards 2012 in association with BT will be outlining the work that made them finalists, the impact it has had, and the latest developments in their projects in the EHI Awards Theatre.
  • The Best Practice Showcase has been expanded this year to provide even more space for EHI Live visitors to meet people from NHS trusts working at the cutting edge of innovation and implementation, to find out what works and who is behind the success stories.
  • In addition, carefully selected innovative healthcare suppliers will be leading sessions that provide a glimpse into the future in The Pipeline.
