Healthcare IT Company EMIS Group Announces Intention to Float on AIM

EMIS Group Limited ("EMIS" or "the Group"), the UK's leading supplier of healthcare software and related services to GPs, has announced its intention to float on AIM via a placing of its shares.

The flotation is seeking to raise approximately £50 million gross, or 25% of EMIS' issued share capital and the Group is anticipated to have a post-float market capitalisation of approximately £200 million. Evolution Securities Limited is acting as Nominated Adviser and broker to EMIS.

Background to EMIS
Yorkshire-based EMIS, which employs over 780 people, was established in 1987 following initial work by two doctors who identified a growing need to computerise the cradle-to-grave patient records then kept on paper at GPs' surgeries.

EMIS now has a leading position in the UK with around 34 million patient records held on its platform, representing 52% of all GP practices.

In 2009, EMIS generated an operating profit of £15.8 million on turnover of £58 million.

EMIS has a history of innovation and successful product development and, in keeping with NHS policy for IT, the Group is committed to delivering software systems and services that improve patient care. Later this year the Group will launch a major new product, EMIS Web, which it believes represents the future of healthcare software.

EMIS Web electronically connects GPs with other NHS professionals by enabling secure, shared, centrally hosted access to patients' cradle-to-grave electronic health records held at the Group's data centres. The transformational system has the capability to interconnect with other NHS patient data systems to:

  • save time and money by eliminating paperwork and the re-inputting of data;
  • significantly reduce patient waiting times; and
  • reduce the risk of prescribing and treatment errors.

EMIS Web is currently being rolled out across multidisciplinary healthcare teams within NHS Primary Care and Acute Trusts at Tower Hamlets, Liverpool and Gateshead with compelling results. In Liverpool, waiting times for minor surgery have reduced from a nine month average to, in some cases, same day appointments; and at Tower Hamlets, the physiotherapy team have saved on average seven hours a week in administrative time.

Reasons for Admission
Following admission to AIM, the Directors intend to continue to grow EMIS through the roll-out of EMIS Web into additional primary care settings and across multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Where appropriate, this may provide opportunities for bolt-on acquisitions to streamline and further enhance the service offering across EMIS's customer base. A listing on AIM would provide the flexibility in funding such acquisitions.

In addition, EMIS wishes to incentivise the next tier of management and broaden its shareholder base, providing a platform for the trading of its shares.

Sean Riddell, Chief Executive of EMIS, said: "EMIS has built a pre-eminent market position by providing simple to use, scalable data systems based on our inherent understanding of the needs of healthcare professionals.

"In the UK, we see EMIS Web as a key component in the future of NHS IT because it enables healthcare practitioners to deliver quicker, better patient care through the sharing of key patient information between different healthcare teams.

"EMIS Web is a core part of our strategy and will provide us with both organic growth and acquisition opportunities as we continue to develop its potential across the whole healthcare spectrum - including primary, secondary and community care settings.

"A flotation on AIM will position EMIS to take advantage of growth opportunities, broaden our shareholder base and further incentivise management."

About EMIS Group Limited
EMIS was established in March 1987 by two GPs who identified an opportunity to develop and supply practice management software and computerise patients' electronic health records then kept on paper at GPs' surgeries.

The Group has since become the UK's leading supplier of software and related services to GP surgeries and now leads the market, with around 34 million patient records held on its platform.

EMIS's software allows GPs to access and amend patients' electronic health records as well as make appointments and prescribe medication. The Group also provides support services such as installation, training and maintenance as well as hardware such as touch screen kiosks where patients can view their own medical records within the surgery waiting room and automated check-in equipment that allow patients to electronically notify their GP that they have arrived at the surgery for an appointment.

The Group's latest product, EMIS Web, represents the next generation of healthcare software systems, providing multidisciplinary healthcare teams with secure, shared access to patients' electronic health records, reducing waiting times, saving administrative time and cost and reducing the risk of errors.

EMIS is headquartered in Leeds with an overseas office in Canada. It employs 786 people, mainly in the UK.
