Maasstad Ziekenhuis in The Netherlands Utilise Remote Archiving Services from Carestream Health

Carestream HealthCarestream Health announced a five-year eHealth Managed Services (eMS) agreement with Maasstad Ziekenhuis in Rotterdam, the Netherlands for remote storage of DICOM and non-DICOM data. Over 70 terabytes of legacy data will be migrated to the eMS datacenter, which will serve as a PACS neutral remote archive, with additional archiving of approximately 180,000 new studies generated annually by the Maasstad facility.

The Dutch healthcare market is mature, having been fully digital for a number of years, and increasingly hospitals and imaging centres are facing data storage and obsolescence management issues as a consequence of growing volumes of patient data. Carestream Health's remote archive architecture is based on a Grid infrastructure that interfaces to any PACS, modality and RIS system using IHE standards. Data is securely archived and enables remote access by authorised users using intelligent streaming for smooth transfer of images, even large studies.

"We selected Carestream Health to migrate and manage our large volumes of data as they were ahead of their competitors in leveraging an eMS service, in particular with their technical configuration and expertise," said Tjeerd Canrinus, IT Manager at Maasstad Ziekenhuis.

Carestream Health's expertise in eHealth Managed Services comes from current management of more than 10 million imaging studies worldwide, representing more than 500 terabytes of data. The company operates eight data centres in five countries to service healthcare providers throughout Europe and North America.

This growth reflects a trend by healthcare providers to contract with an external data services provider in a move to reduce capital expenses since hardware, software, maintenance, monitoring, upgrades and obsolescence management are included as part of the service.

"Outsourcing clinical data management to a service provider allows multiple healthcare facilities to leverage and share a common data centre platform and pay only a fraction of the total cost based on their own utilisation," said Patrick Koch, Worldwide Business Director, eHealth Managed Services. "Our eHealth Managed Services offering also equips healthcare systems with a smooth and easy way of selectively and securely sharing information among multiple locations within their enterprise."
