Study on Big Data in Public Health, Telemedine and Healthcare

The aim of the study on Big Data in Public Health, Telemedicine and Healthcare is to identify applicable examples of the use of Big Data in Health and develop recommendations for their implementation in the European Union. Examples of Big Data in Health were identified by a systematic literature review, after which the added value of twenty selected examples was evaluated. Based on the assessment of the added value and the quality of the evidence, ten priority examples were selected. Furthermore, potential policy actions for the implementation of Big Data in Health were identified in the literature, and a SWOT analysis was conducted to check the feasibility of the proposed actions.

Healthcare in Denmark

This publication provides an overview of the scope and organisation of health and elderly care in Denmark. The healthcare system operates across three political and administrative levels: the state, the regions and the municipalities (national, regional and local levels).

The state holds the overall regulatory and supervisory functions in health and elderly care. The five regions are primarily responsible for the hospitals, the general practitioners (GPs) and for psychiatric care. The 98 municipalities are responsible for a number of primary healthcare services as well as for elderly care.

Artificial Beta Cells

Researchers led by ETH Professor Martin Fussenegger at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) in Basel have produced artificial beta cells using a straightforward engineering approach. The artificial beta cells can do everything that natural ones do: they measure the glucose concentration in the blood and produce enough insulin to effectively lower the blood sugar level.
