The government has finally published its long-awaited response to the Caldicott2 review of information sharing in the NHS - and, as many of us had hoped, has accepted all of its recommendations. It's a landmark moment that could see the NHS turn an important corner and stride progressively towards building transformational models of care.

In a bioinformatics breakthrough, iMinds - STADIUS - KU Leuven researchers have successfully applied advanced artificial intelligence to enable the automated analysis of huge amounts of genetic data. Their new software suite, eXtasy, automatically generates the most likely cause of a given genetic disorder. The breakthrough directly impacts the treatment of millions of people with a hereditary disease.
IBM (NYSE: IBM) scientists are collabo-rating with pathologists at the University Hospital Zürich to test a new proto-type tool to accurately diagnose different types of cancer. This work is based on a technology developed by IBM scientists called a microfluidic probe, which slightly resembles the nib of a fountain pen.
Advanced Health & Care (Advanced) has announced the launch of Caresys version 8, the latest version of the software company's widely used end-to-end care home management solution. The new version includes many new features including an updated user interface, designed to enhance navigation.

The call to create a "paperless NHS" by 2018 aims to deliver improvements in patient safety, experiences of patients and health care professionals, as well as delivering high quality care and increase efficiency. The focus so far has, largely, been on digitising patient records, especially with the launch of the £260 million "Safer Wards, Safer Hospitals" Technology Fund, which will provide match funding for NHS providers in England to support the move away from paper-based systems.
