Carestream Health Installs PACS Into Three Military Hospitals in Austria

Carestream Health, Inc.Carestream Health has installed a PACS solution into three military hospitals in Austria to aid medical examinations for soldiers, civil servants and military attaché. The solution consists of installations at Wien-Stammersdorf in Vienna, together with hospitals at Graz and Innsbruck, all of which are linked to a central PACS archive located in Vienna.

The tender process to replace the existing PACS systems in these hospitals was conducted by the National Defence Ministry for Armament and Procurement. They conducted extensive market research for manufacturers who could meet the Ministry's stringent criterion, which included a strong brand reputation, high levels of quality, service and flexible financing.

Dr. P. Rankl, Senior Consultant for the Radiology and Imaging Diagnostics Department at the military hospital in Wien-Stammersdorf, the largest military hospital of the Austrian Armed Forces, is impressed with the system. "The PACS is well thought-out and compact; and is a sophisticated high-tech system of a high standard. We require a PACS System that can be customised to meet our needs as we provide specialist care, which only a small number of hospitals are able to provide. We conduct a wide range of military service medical examinations and it is important to be able to make asymptomatic early diagnosis."

The Wien-Stammersdorf in Vienna handles over 130,000 outpatients and around 6,000 in-patient treatments annually. The main focus is on army and disaster medical services, alongside standard medical specialisations.

Over the last few years the hospital has gained international recognition as the Institute for International Medical Support (IMS) and Vaccination Centre for the Austrian Armed Forces, which is the central coordinator for the medical examination of soldiers and other specialised workers engaged in foreign deployment.

With recent technological advances, the role of the radiologist has changed from a primarily descriptive function to a diagnostic one. In using the CARESTREAM PACS Dr. Rankl values the ability to make real-time evaluations of sensitive and serious cases with his colleagues in Innsbruck and Graz via the data connection. "This leads to the desired results in diagnosis and treatment, which has only now become possible using PACS and system networking," he said. Plans are also in hand to utilise the PACS to aid remote diagnosis for soldiers who are deployed abroad, allowing treatment to be given in a timely manner.
