Debate on ICT for Healthcare in Europe

In a time of crisis healthcare budgets are increasingly coming under pressure, and many argue that cuts in this sector could increase both inefficiency and inequality, leading to serious social problems in the future. At the same time, technological solutions are being suggested as a way to both drive down prices and ensure long-term sustainability in the face of both looming demographic challenges and more immediate economic problems. There is, then, plenty of scope for debate between citizens and stakeholders on the proper policy choices as we go forwards.

In June, Friends of Europe and Europe's World launched an ambitious on-line project in partnership with the European Parliament, Microsoft and Gallup called "Debating Europe" - a debating platform that lets citizens discuss their ideas with Europe's leaders. The project wants to encourage a genuine conversation between European policy makers and citizens. Debating Europe encourages citizens to submit ideas and then gets both supportive and critical reactions from policy makers, provoking as much back-and-forth discussion as possible between readers and the experts taking part in the project.

Debating Europe has published a post on healthcare in Europe, with contributions from Paul Timmers, Director of ICT addressing Societal Challenges at DG INFSO; Ed Percy, Business Director-Manager for Healthcare at Logica; Diogo Reis, IT Manager of the Hospital Fernando Fonseca in Portugal and a consultant for the Central Health Record Solutions of the Portuguese Ministry of Health; and Antonyia Parvanova, MEP and healthcare professional.
