Stanford University's distributed computing program Folding@home has become a major force in researching cures to life-threatening diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, and Parkinson's disease by combining the computing horsepower of millions of processors to simulate protein folding.

The Open eHealth Foundation (OeHF), an open source initiative for the efficient exchange of medical information based on existing standards, is officially registered as a nonprofit organization in Delaware. This milestone enables the foundation (which was launched at HIMMS 2008 by Agfa HealthCare, InterComponentWare and Sun Microsystems) to begin operations.

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) announced a global effort to improve access to tools needed to develop, maintain, and enable the use of SNOMED CT in health systems around the world. This effort is part of an Open Health Tools Charter Project jointly sponsored by IHTSDO, the National Health Service in the UK and Australia's National e-Health Transition Authority.

Stollmann has been one of the first manufacturers in the world to implement the Bluetooth SIG's Health Device Profile (HDP) for medical devices. According to the terms of their cooperative agreement, Stollmann is now making this profile available to the members of the Continua Health Alliance, an organization of the most important global medical device manufacturers.

IBM announced that it is collaborating with nine business partners to help healthcare providers, clinics and hospitals improve productivity, increase quality and reduce costs through the use of service oriented architecture (SOA). These partners are all working to develop their latest healthcare applications using the IBM SOA Foundation and supporting a set of open technology and industry standards.
